![]() ![]() Prior to the vote, Minority Leader Frank Mauriello, who represents part of Colonie, introduced an amendment that would have required some county employees, such as those in the Mental Health and Social Services departments, to hand out notices to residents they came in contact with warning about the dangers of illegal firearms. ![]() The law also requires the county clerk’s office to give the notification to anyone who receives a firearm permit. ![]() The legislation was introduced in the wake of the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, earlier this year. McCoy's spokeswoman Mary Rozak said the county executive's office has not scrutinized the legislation passed Monday and McCoy would not take a position on the matter until a review was complete. The legislation awaits action by County Executive Dan McCoy. “This is a commonsense measure at the county level to address gun violence, and if this warning sign prevents just one suicide, accidental death, or domestic violence death it will be worth it,” he said in a statement. Legislator Dustin Reidy, who represents part of Guilderland, said the law, known as the Albany County Commitment to Ensuring a Safe Society, was intended to inform buyers of the dangers of bringing a gun into a home and connect those who need help with emergency services. ![]()
